Since the organization was formed, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, in conjunction with its partners Sunrise Medical & DMR, has been donating new, power wheelchairs to children and young adults in need across the country.  The Foundation receives many requests from people asking for assistance in getting a wheelchair for themselves or a family member who cannot otherwise receive one.  The cost of a new chair can be alarmingly expensive and coupled with the other numerous costs associated with spinal cord injuries and debilitating diseases, it can be troublesome to purchase a new wheelchair.  On average, a power wheelchair can run approximately $10,000.  Unfortunately, insurance does not always cover the expense.

Having the right wheelchair is of the utmost importance to those who live with spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases.  Wheelchairs serve as legs for those who cannot walk.  DGF works closely with its recipients’ physical therapists and doctors to custom fit the recipient with a wheelchair that will properly fit their needs and abilities.

To date, the DGF Wheelchair Donation Program has provided over 50 new wheelchairs nationwide to underprivileged youths and young adults, valued at over half a million dollars. The following steps provide a good overview of how the wheelchair program works.

  1. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation receives a Wheelchair Donation Program application. This application requires many pieces of documentation and information before it can be reviewed by our panel. Attached in a separate PDF document you will find a copy of this application.
  2. A Release and Waiver of Liability is one piece of documentation needed before we review the application. (Attached to the Wheelchair application)
  3. Once we accept the application we send it in its entirety to DMR, a South Florida wheelchair distributor. DMR is responsible for determining the best wheelchair the applicant needs based on brain function and physical requirements. DMR has been serving the disabled community for more than 23 years.
  4. The wheelchair is ordered and several fittings are performed to custom fit the individual.
  5. Many of our wheelchairs are given away during special events, such as Barrett-Jackson, the Worlds Largest Car Auction and Nascar races
