Austin Bruder, 14, is very much into woodworking. He learned his craft from his dad and YouTube. Austin says, “making things out of wood is more appealing to me than playing sports.”
How did you learn to do your craft? Who taught you?
I learned a lot about woodworking from my Dad and watching makers on YouTube. I got my first wood lathe about two years ago.

What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to do your craft?
The hardest part is learning how to control the lathe tools I need to use.
What inspired you to choose this type of craft? Making things out of wood seemed more appealing to me than playing sports.
What do you like most (and dislike most) about your craft?
The thing I like most is being able to make detailed projects look nice. I dislike the mess made during the first stages of a project and wish unique woods were less expensive to buy.
Which art piece are you most proud of, and why?
I am really proud of the hickory bowl I made as it was my first bowl project and is made from a neighbor’s tree branch.
What are some of the other benefits you gained from doing your craft?
I have learned to be more patient and have made new friends.
Austin does his craft in the basement of his home, and the art piece he is the most proud of is a bowl he made from a cherry blossom tree cut down from his front yard.
