Age: 26
Disorder: Autism/Intellectual disability
Style of Art: Shell painting
As told to us by his mom, Elaine
Adam Flasterstein, 26, is a multi-media artist. He uses collected beach shells and paint to re-create his favorite Disney characters on canvas.
What inspired you to choose this type of craft?
I love to collect shells at the beach. One day, my brother and I decided to do an art project with them. I printed a picture of the characters of Zootopia (Disney movie) to recreate. Using my imagination, we created the characters using shells and paint. I enjoyed it so much, I kept doing it on my own.
What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to do your craft?
I don’t like waiting for the paint to dry, so I use a blow drier to speed it up.
Which art piece are you most proud of, and why?
I am most proud of my Zootopia piece because Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps are my favorite characters.
What are some of the other benefits you gained from doing your craft?
I enjoy being able to use my imagination to create art of my favorite characters from my favorite movies and tv shows…It’s my career.
