“Foodie” Fun for Kids: Hot Cocoa (Old School)
Encouraging Speech & Creating Yum! Hot Cocoa
History
When I was little, I would get so excited for Saturday and Sunday morning because that meant my dad was going to make me Hot Cocoa. It seemed like the hardest thing to make when I was little, but, as I got older, I realized how easy it actually was to make. I still ask my Dad to make me hot cocoa when I go back home to visit, it is our little bonding time and I don’t know why, but, it is always better when he makes it for me.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon Cocoa Powder
- 1.5 -2 teaspoon sugar
- (depending how sweet you want it)
- 1 cup of warmed milk
Instructions
Parent: Heat the milk in a pot over the stove on medium high, stirring while warming up (about 2 minutes). You never want the milk to come to a boil. You could also place the milk in the microwave for about 2 minutes to get the same result.
Kiddo: Scoop 1.5 teaspoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cocoa powder into your cup and add 1 teaspoon of the hot milk. Stir until it becomes a chocolate syrup texture.
Parent: Slowly start adding the rest of the hot milk while stirring the entire time. You may have your kid stir as you add in the milk; remember, add it in slow.
Kiddo: Make sure it is cool enough and enjoy! You can add marshmallows on top, small while chocolate chips, OR just have it “as is” (my favorite way to drink it).
Language time:
Use this time to talk about hot drinks and cold drinks. Have them name 3 hot drinks and 3 cold drinks. Talk about when you would drink each drink and which is their favorite. Once the drink is made, it is a good time to cozy up on a sofa, grab a book and read with your kiddo!
