Special Needs Classes Learn About Fire Department

The Hinesville Fire Department held a tour at Station One for Fran North’s special needs class from Snelson Golden Middle School and Kelli Wilson’s class from Lewis Frazier Middle School. The teachers brought their students to the station and were entertained and informed about the many details of the Hinesville Fire Department.
The group was welcomed by Engineer Mike Riddle, and briefly told about the fire department, and what the students and teachers could expect during the Station Tour.
Firefighter’s Mike Scoggins and Terry Satterfield then took over the tour, showing the class all of the different trucks, and the entire station.
The two firefighters gave a “Friendly Firefighter Demonstration”, where Scoggins, put on his firefighting protective suit, including his Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. The purpose of the demonstration was to show the kids that even when a firefighter has his protective suit on, he is not to be feared. That underneath all of that gear and mask, a nice firefighter was still there, and that he always wanted to help all kids.
One of the children’s favorite parts of the tour was when rookie firefighter’s Nick Croft and Charles Helton held a race of who could put their protective suit on faster. The children were divided up into two groups to cheer for each firefighter. Helton won the race, but all of the kids cheered loudly for both men.
Chief Lamar Cook also came out and talked to the group about the importance of the department protecting Hinesville, and how the goal of the department is to always provide good service to the community.
“This was a wonderful field trip for the kids, and it was very informative”, said Wilson.
North added, “This was a very good tour, it’s important for the children to see firefighters and police officers as their friends; we also like to bring the kids out, because it’s good for the community to see them and how important they are”.
The day wrapped up with the Firefighter John Yesis giving out gift bags to the class, which the firefighters had made up earlier.
