Parenting with Positive Behavior Support: A Practical Guide to Resolving Your Child’s Difficult Behavior reviewed by Christine Goulbourne
This is a book every parent of a child with challenging behaviors needs to “read and keep”. As a parent of a child with severe autism, who attended many FBA (Functional Behavior Assessment) meetings, worked with IEP teams on countless Behavioral Intervention Plans, I recommend this book be given to parents the moment behavioral issues are discovered.
This book provides in-depth information on the basic principles of PBS (Positive Behavior Supports); teaching us that the overall goal is to improve our children’s quality of life. In addition, it is to enhance our experiences enjoyed as a family. It dispels myths such as: PBS is taught at schools and merely reinforced by parents at home. My greatest takeaway has been my understanding of its principles and practices. I thought that eliminating challenging behaviors meant we reached the finish line; I had no idea that I needed to include a strategy for teaching my child new skills. I learned that PBS is to be practiced across all settings; it is to be understood by all stakeholders, and it is quite simply a way of life.
The book offers an easy to read, step-by-step guide through the PBS process. It gives parents the opportunity to independently create a plan for addressing identified challenging behaviors. For each step and strategy, a relevant example is shared, and problem-solving examples are provided. Reminders throughout the book tell readers that the forms used in the examples are available in the Appendix for printing and re-use.
This collaborative work of the authors (Meme Hieneman; Karen Childs; Jane Sergay) is a brilliant merge of experienced talent and highlights their areas of expertise, both individually and as a team.
