From The Heart: Look Up

From The Heart Look Up

Chantai Snellgrove [1]

This issue shares about summer fun and travel. It reminded me of a trip that I took several years ago with my brother and sister, for a family reunion, to Knoxville, Tennessee. A cousin, who has horses, took us horseback riding up and through the hills, valleys, and along the side of a mountain on his hundred-acre farm. It felt a bit treacherous to me and, I admit, I was a bit scared. I was concentrating so hard on the horse’s footing that I was looking down the entire time and forgot to look up. When I did finally look up, I was amazed to see how truly beautiful my surroundings were and how far we had come. At that we were in a valley and the grass, trees, and sky were breathtaking. I was so thankful I looked up…. I began to relax a bit and started to enjoy and appreciate how awesome an experience this thrilling adventure in nature was. I think, as parents of special needs kids, that we concentrate so much on the day to day, therapy, school and life skills that we forget to look up…to see how far our child has actually come.
