Take holiday light viewing to a new level with one or both of these fun, downloadable scavenger hunts. Choose from Christmas light decorations and inflatables. We also have a Chanukah decoration scavenger hunt. Your family will enjoy searching for the items on the lists as you walk or drive around looking at holiday lights.
Embark on a Fun Holiday Light Scavenger Hunt
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
Holiday time is so festive, allowing us to see beautiful decorations on homes, yards, and businesses. Many people look forward to driving around neighborhoods or taking leisurely strolls to look at lights, inflatables, and other holiday trimmings.
Because many holiday traditions can be difficult with a child with special needs, taking advantage of those that don’t require specific actions are always welcome. You don’t have to worry about whether your child can assemble a gingerbread house, string popcorn, ice skate, or sing holiday songs.
You can make viewing holiday lights and decorations more fun with a scavenger hunt. This is an activity the whole family can enjoy together as you stroll the neighborhood, shopping centers, or drive around town. Many cities hold contests and post addresses of the contestants, making it possible to see some of the best displays.
With a holiday scavenger hunt, you search for the items on your card. You can also make your customized list featuring some of your holiday favorites, such as Disney characters, Santa, Mrs. Clause, reindeer, and the elves, or holiday stories, such as The Grinch. You can also look for traditional holiday cutouts rather than animatronic characters.
Today, many Jewish families decorate Chanukkah with elaborate and fun holiday decorations, so we have included a scavenger hunt list for that, as well.
Once you finish finding everything on your list, you can return home for cookies and hot chocolate. That’s also a good time to go back and check out our movie and show list to put on a family favorite.
Holiday decoration scavenger hunts are excursions that are great for everyone, not just the little ones. Everyone can participate and no one feels excluded.
One way to engage everyone is by making a competition out of it. If you have four or more people in the car, divide the teams on the left side of the car (driver’s side) and on the right side. Provide the teams with the same checklist, and whichever team finished the entire checklist first wins.
It’s best to go down a neighborhood street that isn’t heavily trafficked to give everyone time to find the items on their list. You might want to put on your hazard lights and go 5-10 MPH so that everyone can see the houses. Holiday decoration scavenger hunts are a great way to spend quality family time together.
