How to Improve Brain Health Through Stress Reduction

Chronic stress keeps cortisol levels higher than normal, interfering with the production of other crucial hormones that regulate health and brain functions. People who have higher stress levels are more likely to become sick, have sleep disturbances, and suffer from declining cognitive abilities.

We are not always aware of the various things in our daily lives that contribute to increased stress. As adults, we face challenges in our careers, relationships, family dynamics, and health issues (our own and our children’s).  For children, common stressors include school and grades, bullying, negative body image thoughts, puberty, safety, and family issues (finances, divorce, fighting, etc.). Social media and the news can create significant stressors for children who are faced with an ongoing borage of negative images.

Reducing stress in your child is crucial for their brain health and physical well-being.  While it is impossible to eliminate all stress in life, knowing how to address it and actions that can help lower stress can make a significant difference for you and your child.

Some stress can be positive, as it helps your child focus and prepares them to face challenges.  Coping skills are crucial for everyone.  Talking about situations that might become stressful in advance and preparing your child for what to expect can help reduce anxiety when these issues arise.

Being mindful of stress in your child’s life can help you take action to improve their emotional well-being.
