Kids Books: The Great Katie Kate Explains Epilepsy
The Great Katie Kate Explains Epilepsy
The Great Katie Kate Explains Epilepsy is a book designed to help children with epilepsy understand their condition and decrease anxiety and fears. It is written by a radiation oncologist who specializes in the treatment of women’s and children’s cancer.
I have seen children’s books before about epilepsy, but this book stands out for many different reasons. It is based around a super hero character named Katie Kate who is there to help a boy named Jimmy understand his condition of epilepsy. The book is beautifully illustrated, which makes the book motivating to read. The vocabulary is complex enough for an older child to benefit and learn from. This book explains what epilepsy is, normalizes it by explaining how many people have it, describes the different kinds of epilepsy, and discusses how to prevent any more seizures from occurring. This book is excellent to read for children in many different situations. From my perspective, this book would be ideal for children just diagnosed with epilepsy, have recently had a seizure, or for a family member or friend who knows someone with epilepsy. The characters are likeable, easy to follow and the story is engaging. It would also be beneficial to read this book within the classroom to better teach students about the epilepsy. Also included is a note to parents and caregivers with tips on how to use the book more effectively.
