Thanksgiving: A Perfect Time to Learn How to Set the Table

Proper Table Setting: a good life skill…

This year, as we are trying to assign roles and keep our children busy doing functional tasks during the holidays, I think learning how to set the table properly is a great life skill.

I know, I’m in my…. Oh let’s not talk age….but, I’m older. In fact, as of yesterday, I am exactly one year older, and I still have not mastered this life skill. As we celebrated my birthday at a nice restaurant last night, I had to ask my husband if the glass to my right was my water glass. You might laugh, but several other adults (I won’t mention names) didn’t know either. I had an “Ah ha” moment; I thought I could really use and appreciate a visual aide/guide to help me to remember the essential placement at a formal dinner table setting. Then I thought, “why not create one and share”? I realize that there are plenty of them on the Internet, but I thought it would be great for my daughter to be able to use this visual guide and have her help set the table. A perfect way to include my daughter in the holiday “busy-ness” is to assign her the job as the “official-table-setter-helper”. This gives her an important functional task during the holidays and then carries over to the less formal setting for nightly meals.

Don’t forget to include your family member this holiday season by assigning roles or having them help as much as possible. Here are a few suggestions from Rebecca McKee, MSED, ACBA; let family member help to create a food shopping list pertaining to Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas cookie recipes; have them push the cart and find the items in the supermarket; load the dishwasher after the meal. In other words, try to use their excitable, nervous energies as much as possible in a positive, proactive way.
